Local histories are usually works for the archive, parochial chronicles designed to preserve at least some trace of people and places that seem destined to vanish from memory, but this is a book on late modernity, the idea of history itself and on the art of writing about it.</span></span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><i><span style="font-family: times;"></span></i></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i><span style="font-family: times;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlodFwGVxsy6_imoFRH-PInILgXSjSOZJQ92rPbS4_hAtHTbUGETQz8qUEINqgxfwNoPok3L7NpnMFrOu0UAWepKNFlKh5xhvVMRgMTnjunWA_HHOWgqkNpamjM83NBxSl4SDPm_PV4LxPtvyT7PBZegFO4mNl8JSaBq_pjwgaoQZNg36eL9Mw_zOR/s1182/Under%20the%20Escarpment%20Blurb%20image%202.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="532" data-original-width="1182" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlodFwGVxsy6_imoFRH-PInILgXSjSOZJQ92rPbS4_hAtHTbUGETQz8qUEINqgxfwNoPok3L7NpnMFrOu0UAWepKNFlKh5xhvVMRgMTnjunWA_HHOWgqkNpamjM83NBxSl4SDPm_PV4LxPtvyT7PBZegFO4mNl8JSaBq_pjwgaoQZNg36eL9Mw_zOR/w398-h179/Under%20the%20Escarpment%20Blurb%20image%202.jpg" width="398" /></a></span></i></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i><br /></i></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: times; text-align: left;">Beginning with an invasion of ‘new settlers’ in the 1970s, <i>Under the Escarpment</i> is an essay on late modern history in a valley in northern New South Wales and of the small town of Bellingen that sits on the river that runs through it.</span></div><div><div><span style="font-family: times;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: times;">The new settlers recapitulated the invasion of the colonial settlers who a century earlier had come to the valley and taken the land of the Gumbayngirr people. There were conflicts over land use, forms of tenure and the economy of the valley, over what, from the outset, was called ‘lifestyle’, over the style and look of the town itself, and over nature: the forests that surrounded the town, and the river that flowed out of them.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: times;"><br /></span></div><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: times;">The story of arrival, conflict, and change is told in a series of long overlapping events. As events played out the town came to foster a peculiar sense of its own destiny. Perhaps it had something to do with its small size, its localized media, the way the little society seemed to be enclosed in its own valley, set on its beguiling river, in under an escarpment that reflected its moods back on itself. The town saw itself as cultivating an aesthetic culture and was intent upon imagining itself as a ‘creative town’. According to its own image, the town of Bellingen played itself, staging its civic performance against the backdrop of the escarpment.</span></p><div><span style="font-family: times;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: times;">Still, history does not play out quite as hoped for or expected.</span></div></div><div><span style="font-family: times;"><br /></span></div><div>Check a review of the book on <a href="http://bellingenarea.blogspot.com/2022/06/under-escarpment-review.html">Bellingen Area</a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0px 40px; padding: 0px;"><div><span style="font-family: times;"><div style="text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhk9DG1WpFaXUbSc9RQs9E5M88D8w1whHqg158S9xl6bWIUbPuXS_S3rCa3NPSAFXDJRl_AnIJD72dD8RmmpywDjXd5t85falEVebOlRU504ACr6ayjpUuvNhSVan3qxYDLLf-Ia_4H8KDWqayNVlNScDSNawv5vRKJ4oVsydQS97IwQY6HW2-i3HKC/s2325/Under%20the%20Escarpment%20FRONT%20reduced.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2325" data-original-width="1505" height="362" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhk9DG1WpFaXUbSc9RQs9E5M88D8w1whHqg158S9xl6bWIUbPuXS_S3rCa3NPSAFXDJRl_AnIJD72dD8RmmpywDjXd5t85falEVebOlRU504ACr6ayjpUuvNhSVan3qxYDLLf-Ia_4H8KDWqayNVlNScDSNawv5vRKJ4oVsydQS97IwQY6HW2-i3HKC/w235-h362/Under%20the%20Escarpment%20FRONT%20reduced.jpg" width="235" /></a>$25.00 a copy.</div></span></div></blockquote><p> </p><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0px 40px; padding: 0px;"><div><span style="font-family: times;"><div style="text-align: left;">Inquire about copies at Alternatives Bookshop, Bellingen, and Book Warehouse, Coffs Harbour. Philosophy of Fiction </i><span style="font-style: normal;">(1999)</span>:
A book on the concept of fiction, that asks questions such as What it
fiction? Is a work of fiction something that is true? What is
narrative? What is narrative in that it can work in quite different
media (drama, video, literary, etc)?. This book is written in the
philosophical tradition, in particular the theory of human
intersubjectivity, whether considered as a concern of Anglophone
philosophy of language, critical European philosophy and
phenomenology, or late twentieth century critical theory.</span></span></span></div>

<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><i>Nature
Culture </i><span style="font-style: normal;">(2005)</span>: A series
of essays on the contemporary aesthetics of nature and ecological
restoration as an art rather than as a purely functionalist
discipline of ecosystem management. It begins with the understanding
that there is no such thing on earth as extra-human nature and that
in Australia in particular the native ecosystems have been worked on
for thousands of years. The essays, written as literary and
philosophical essays, are about the personal experience of nature in
the rainforests and eucalypt forests of northern NSW.</span></span></span></div>

Their evolution, their long fashioning at the hands of the Gumbaynggirr people, and their transformation at the hands of agriculture, industrial society, and now environmental management, supplies the ecological detail of Nature Culture.<br /><br />The culture of the title refers to the modern culture of nature. The history of this culture is also a kind of natural history - a wild process of social evolution, at the mercy of surreptitious and unconscious pressures. Its results often defy our intentions and best interests, distorting both the image of nature and nature itself.</span> <span property="dc:type" content="Text"> </span></span></object> <div style="margin: 6px auto 3px; font-family: Helvetica,Arial,Sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; display: block;"> </div><a href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/14465106/Nature-Culture">Download</a>.</span>northbankhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17764220434474903244noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-502409669501294838.post-70262479497221086752009-04-18T00:29:00.000-07:002009-04-20T19:43:09.990-07:00<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi92-BBWfLLbV_Cc9N3XNWldfuWuS7tVbfj0TK8cQZbgoQTFuaGIReFt2udRcoJwL1YbFpjOJKyKaBTGFKUnGokiGjLvuicUR4sgP2zVKVqa4k-J5Jv4LcTA2YUtXUApFNHabA18DngdDQ/s1600-h/Bellingen_Cover.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 282px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi92-BBWfLLbV_Cc9N3XNWldfuWuS7tVbfj0TK8cQZbgoQTFuaGIReFt2udRcoJwL1YbFpjOJKyKaBTGFKUnGokiGjLvuicUR4sgP2zVKVqa4k-J5Jv4LcTA2YUtXUApFNHabA18DngdDQ/s400/Bellingen_Cover.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5325930966892036498" border="0" /></a><a title="View Bellingen, The Concept on Scribd" href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/14355995/Bellingen-The-Concept" style="margin: 12px auto 6px; font-family: Helvetica,Arial,Sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; display: block; text-decoration: underline;">Bellingen, The Concept</a> <object codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=9,0,0,0" id="doc_721250719479393" name="doc_721250719479393" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" rel="media:document" resource="http://d.scribd.com/ScribdViewer.swf?document_id=14355995&access_key=key-238w9dwth7vr4rgz945z&page=1&version=1&viewMode=" media="http://search.yahoo.com/searchmonkey/media/" dc="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" align="middle" width="100%" height="500"> <param name="movie" value="http://d.scribd.com/ScribdViewer.swf?document_id=14355995&access_key=key-238w9dwth7vr4rgz945z&page=1&version=1&viewMode="> <param name="quality" value="high"> <param name="play" value="true"> <param name="loop" value="true"> <param name="scale" value="showall"> <param name="wmode" value="opaque"> <param name="devicefont" value="false"> <param name="bgcolor" value="#ffffff"> <param name="menu" value="true"> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"> <param name="salign" value=""> <embed src="http://d.scribd.com/ScribdViewer.swf?document_id=14355995&access_key=key-238w9dwth7vr4rgz945z&page=1&version=1&viewMode=" quality="high" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" play="true" loop="true" scale="showall" wmode="opaque" devicefont="false" bgcolor="#ffffff" name="doc_721250719479393_object" menu="true" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" salign="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" align="middle" width="100%" height="500"></embed> <span rel="media:thumbnail" href="http://i.scribd.com/public/images/uploaded/21284781/sde8ENDg3gDlRY6LlVM9_thumbnail.jpeg"> </span></object><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">Cartoons that pretty much explain Bellingen, NSW, Australia. </span><a style="font-family: arial;" href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/14355995/Bellingen-The-Concept">Download</a><span style="font-family:arial;">.</span>northbankhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17764220434474903244noreply@blogger.com0
